#1 Sunscreen Hack Every Woman Traveler Needs to Know: DIY SPF Your Makeup

There are two things for certain that every woman probably wants on her vacation;  great travel photos and to keep healthy during the trip.  And quality sunscreen on your face can help you with both.

While travelling in the summer, your skin is more vulnerable

While travelling, our faces are subject to more stresses and elements that are not typical back home.  We may be outdoors longer, in hot weather and generally being more active.  Aside from the obvious beach time, just spending an afternoon of walking around a city in the summertime can expose your face to glare.  If you are not careful, you might end up discovering a shiny red sunburnt face looming back at you in all of those vacation photos.

My  sunscreen story – questing for perfect facial sunscreen…

As a woman with very fair sensitive skin that is prone to both sunburn and freckling, I have tried countless ways to keep my face protected on summer days and while travelling. Many attempts  involved smelly greasy lotions  as a base and my makeup on top. Ugh.  And some of them burned around my eyes. Ouch.

Recently, I discovered liquid SPF and it has literally changed my life.  I am not a doctor or a dermatologist so this is not medical advice, but I personally vouch that this is the magic bullet for my needs. It is an inexpensive and smart way to create your own high SPF facial sunscreen on that blends easily and is very lightweight with zero greasiness  or griminess.    It even seems to last after swimming, and I have not had it cause burning in my eyes.   Literally, I want every woman on the planet to know about this, in case this is a magic bullet for you too.

Be travel photo-ready & skin protected with tinted SPF makeup

Anytime the sun is shining on your face,  you need sunscreen protection.   But  which sunscreen to use? And should you apply sunscreen on before or after your makeup?  If your makeup base foundation already has SPF  is that enough for you?  Many brands thankfully now offer foundation with SPF of 15-20 which is a fantastic and helpful start.

And I’ve discovered a terrific way to boost the SPF of my foundation and the result (in my opinion) is the best sunscreen for faces (and beach vacations!) that I have ever used. The secret?  Liquid SPF.  Not a cream or ointment stick, but a watery liquid that lightly soaks into skin and/or blends with makeup to give  lightweight ooomph!

DIY Sunscreen Tinted Makeup

#1 Best Travel Suncscreen Hack for Women

RECIPE  FOR DIY TINTED FACIAL SUNSCREEN MAKEUP

2 Ingredients you will need to make tinted SPF sunscreen makeup:

  1. Your preferred brand/color of liquid foundation makeup (I used Loreal “Infallable” SPF 15)
  2. A bottle of Liquid SPF or sunscreen of your choice (I used Liquid SPF 70 from Neutrogena)

Notes:
I have tried blending foundation with various sunscreen lotions and have found the liquid SPF to be the easiest and feels most natural on the skin, and also offers a very high SPF so even just a little bit goes a long way.

Is it waterproof? While Neutrogena liquid SPF does not state waterpoof on the package, I have found when combined with Loreal Infallable 24 hr makeup that it does have water-resistance.  Even after hours at a lake swimming and relaxing in full summer sun, it was fabulous with full protection and even a light layer of makeup color remained hours later.

Instructions to make tinted SPF sunscreen makeup:

  • Add your typical amount of  foundation you normally use to the palm of your hand
  • Add drops of liquid SPF to preferred ratio

The more liquid sunscreen you add will increase the ratio of SPF to your makeup.  A couple of drops will simply boost SPF and keep your makeup coverage thickness normal.  Adding for 50/50 ratio will create a thinner foundation with stronger stronger SPF protection, resulting in a tinted sunscreen makeup foundation that will look natural.

Plan to be out in the sun most of the day and want ULTIMATE PROTECTION on your face?
Apply thin layer of liquid SPF to your face AND your personal SPF tinted makeup foundation on top.   I have tested this method and it works very well for me.  For an upcoming trip to the sunshine and heat of Croatia in August, this will definitely be part of my daily skin care.  In my sunshine test days so far, even after 3 hours at a lake including swimming, I had no sunburn will still a light layer of makeup evening out my skin tone. Fabulous.

TRAVEL TIP:  FACIAL SUNSCREEN IN A MAKEUP COMPACT

Pre-mix your SPF tinted makeup into an empty makeup cushion compact.  Here’s an example of a perfect small travel size half ounce empty makeup compact on Amazon for under $10. Turns out this is the travel hack sunscreen cool beans idea for facial sunscreen in general with travel sized convenience!
