Lindisfarne: More than the first landing place of Norse Vikings
Okay. So not just about the Norsemen. Not just about the Vikings. Lindisfarne predates that period back to quite an early time with a very holy man called Saint Cuthbert. Saint Cuthbert kind used Lindisfarne or wanted the monastery Abbey, on Lindisfarne, because it was cut off from everything else, it would be less distracting for the young monks, less distracting for him.
Recording the transition from Paganism to Christianity
At Lindisfarne, St. Cuthbert recorded record a period of time that really would have been forgotten without him. It was a time when most of Eastern Europe was changing its religion from Paganism into Christianity. Almost an enlightenment at that point in time. Saint Cuthbert captures this in his writings and sort of explains it, the feelings of the country at that time.
The Lindisfarne Gospels are designed
Then we fast forward to the year 695 and we see the Lindisfarne Gospels. This is where the young monks, such as Athelstan, have the works of Saint Cuthbert and they’re documenting them. They’re writing them in different languages and they’re preserving this information. But the monks are doing this in such beauty and in such writing … with the colorations that they’re using to write one sheet… one page of information could take a year because it was so prettily drawn and colored. The Lindsfarne Gospels were very artistic.
St. Cuthbert Isolates himself to Holy Island
But Saint Cuthbert, he felt he was too distracted on this island of Lindisfarne so moved to another island not that far out, today it is called Holy Island. St. Cuthbert would move onto this island for even more solitude and to spend more time on his own. So, St. Cuthbert was here on Lindisfarne, but there’s also another island that he built a home on and lived there as well. When we walk up over there past the ruins, we can see it offshore.
